But Belay doesn’t live on impact alone. Beneath the weight and movement lies restraint—space for melody, atmosphere, and hypnotic flow. Vocals surface not as decoration, but as emotional anchors, turning club momentum into something immersive and deeply listenable. Belay is the collaborative project of Monotrope and JOIA—two deeply experienced producers and musicians whose shared intuition for sound, rhythm, and emotion has crystallized into a bold new force in electronic music. With over 15 years of individual experience each, Belay represents not a beginning, but a convergence: a meeting of worlds, instincts, and creative momentum.
The pair first crossed paths in late 2024 during a studio session with a mutual friend. What began as a casual connection quietly lingered, only to reignite in early 2025. When they reconvened, the chemistry was immediate and undeniable. Ideas flowed effortlessly, roles emerged naturally, and a simple collaboration quickly evolved into a fully realized partnership. Belay was born not from intention, but inevitability.
At the core of Belay is balance. Monotrope and JOIA bring distinct but complementary strengths—technical precision alongside emotional fluency, meticulous sound design paired with instinctive songwriting. Their shared language is one of curiosity and risk-taking, guided by a mutual trust in each other’s ears and instincts. This synergy extends beyond the studio: together they run the label Doubletake Discs and co-founded Doubletake Creative, a multidisciplinary agency focused on music, sound, and visual identity.

Their music is bold, adventurous, and unconcerned with genre boundaries, drawing freely from UK garage, 2-step, breaks, house, and techno, while weaving in multicultural influences that reflect their broad musical histories. Bass-heavy grooves collide with intricate percussion, emotive melodies, and left-field textures—tracks designed to move bodies while engaging the mind.
